Get up! And Go! Jonah 1:1-3

Jonah 1:1-3

1 The word of (The Lord) Yahweh happened (to come) to Jonah, the son of Amittai[1], saying, 2 Get up! Go to Nineveh[2], the great city, and call out against it, because their wickedness has gone up before me.”

3 And Jonah got up to run away[3] to Tarshish[4], from the presence[5] of (The Lord) Yahweh  He went down (to) Joppa[6], found a ship going to Tarshish, he gave the fare[7], and went down into (the ship), to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of (The Lord) Yahweh.

The Lord Yahweh appeared to Jonah, and told him to get up and go to Nineveh, the great city, and to call out against it because of the people’s wickedness.

So, Jonah did get up, but, instead of going to Nineveh, he went to Joppa to run away from God’s presence.  In Joppa, he found a ship going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and boarded the ship to go with them to Tarshish… away from God’s presence, and in contrast to the Lord Yahweh’s command.

I guess I know the story, but already it’s possible to see that trouble is brewing.  When God speaks, it’s not a wise thing to hear God speak, and then do something else instead.  Jonah was told to go to cry out against the wickedness in Nineveh, but it was too much for him, and he ran away.

God wants to speak to me… and I want to hear… but, when He speaks, the most important thing is that I obey without asking questions, and certainly without running away.  God is good and generous.  His intentions are always in my best interests.  When I obey God, I actually do the best thing for me.

Father, please speak clearly, and please give me the courage to immediately obey You.  I ask for Your power and Your grace in every area of my life.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen
