Consequences Jonah 1:10-11

Jonah 1:10-11

10 And the men were afraid… great fear (came on them), and they said to him, “Why have you done this?” because[1] the men knew that he was running from the presence of (The Lord) Yahweh, since[2] he told them.

11 And they said to him, “What are we do to you (so that) the sea will become calm[3]?” because the sea was moving[4] and stormy[5].

APPLICATION

The men were afraid… and it was a great fear…  This is another interesting point, because the men were already afraid because of the storm.  However, at this point, their fear had increased disproportionally, and they were terrified… i.e. more afraid of what Jonah’s God might do than they were of the storm, before.  Now, they knew its cause.

They asked why Jonah had done this, and the Scripture says that they already knew he was running from the Lord Yahweh, because he’d told them.  Then they asked him what they could do to him to calm down the storm.

It’s evident from this story, the story of the flood and the one about Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5, that God does sometime bring an account for people’s actions.  It would be horribly wrong to say that all disasters are directly caused by sin, because Job, for instance, was THE most righteous man alive, and look what happened to him… not to mention Jesus.  However, better to live God’s way and to fear Him, than to suffer the potential consequences of disobedience and poor decision.

Prayer

Father, please help me to live, and do things, Your way.  Please guide me in the paths of righteousness, even if it’s only to ensure that Your name is honoured among people.  Please bless me and my family, enlarge our territory, that Your hand will be with us, so that we don’t cause pain.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen
