A Bit Fishy Jonah 1:16-17

Jonah 1:16-17

16 And the men were afraid… great fear of (The Lord) Yahweh (came on them).  They offered a scrifice to (The Lord) Yahweh, and they promised[1] vows[2] (to serve Him).

17 And (The Lord) Yahweh appointed[3] a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly[4] of the fish (for) three days and three nights.

Recapping… The seamen, who were afraid of the storm, and even more afraid of what Jonah’s God could do, picked Jonah up, and threw him in to the sea.  Immediately the sea became calm, and they were still more terrified than they had previously been… This time of The Lord Yahweh.

Great fear came on them, and they offered sacrifices to the Lord Yahweh.  Then they also made vows to Him, one assumes to worship and serve Him.

The thing to me is that when God acts, there’s always a redemptive purpose.  Jonah might have been running away from Him, But God used the opportunity to bring a crew-full of seaman to know Him and commit themselves to Him.

Meantime, God appointed a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah ended up in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

I can’t get the three days and three nights, that Jonah spent in the belly of the fish, out of my mind.  I believe that there is a clear pointer, here, of what Christ did when He spent three days and nights in the tomb… There is, therefore, anticipation that this can’t possibly be the end of the story.

Father, thank you that You sent Your Son, Jesus, to die for my sins and my failure to meet Your standard of perfect.  Thank you, that although I was the one who ran away from You, that You caused Your Own Son to spend the three days and three nights in the tomb, before You raised Him up.  Thank you that You intend to raise me up on the last day, and please help me to live in anticipation of that glorious day.

In Jesus’ Name.  Amen
