Serving Isn’t Always Comfortable

Genesis 7:11-14

11 In the six hundred and second year of Noah’s life, in the second month[1], on the seventeenth day of the month… on that day all the fountains[2] of the great deep[3] were broken open[4], and the windows[5] of the heavens were opened. 12 And it happened (that) the rain (was) over the earth (for) forty days and forty nights.13 In that same[6] day Noah, with Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s sons, Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them came into the ark, 14 they and every living thing according to its species, every animal according to its species, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth according to its species, and every bird[7] according to its species and every bird[8] of every wing (type).

Noah was six hundred and two years old when he, Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s wives and his sons’ three wives (one each, to be clear) went into the ark.  Then, on the seventeenth day of the second month of the six hundred and second year of Noahs’ life, the fountains of the deep were broken open and the windows of the heavens were opened.  It appears that water was both coming up and falling down.  The rain continued for forty days and forty nights over the earth.

Meanwhile, Noah, his immediate family, and a representation of every living thing of every species joined him in the ark.

All I can say is that it was very wet outside and very aromatic, of the not so good side of aromatic, inside… not to mention cosy and busy… someone had to feed all those animals… first mention of the world’s first floating zoo.

This speaks to me about the fact that serving God isn’t all about me and my comfort.  Sometimes the situation will stink, and sometimes there will be a lot of hard work.  Yes, God definitely is showing me great mercy, but that doesn’t mean I can sit back in a lounge chair and enjoy the ride.

Father, please help me to serve willingly and with the right attitude.  Please help me to hear Your voice and obey, and, even if I don’t happen to hear so clearly, please guide my steps so that I do what You want me to do, rather than just pander to my own needs and comfort.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen
