God Will Sort The Details

Genesis 5:28-32

28 Lamech lived a hundred and eighty-two years and was father to a son, 29 and he called his name Noah[1], to say, “This (one) will comfort us concerning our work and the pain[2] of our hands… from the ground that (The Lord) Yahweh cursed.” 30 And, after becoming father to Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and was father to sons and daughters. 31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died.

32 Noah was a son of five hundred years and he was father to Shem[3], Ham[4] and Japheth[5].

Application

So, Noah, whose name means “Rest,” Had three sons, Shem (Name), Ham (Hot) and Japheth (Opened).   Noah’s father had named him “Rest” because he thought Noah would bring rest and comfort from all their hard work.  However, that wasn’t to be.

Lamech lived for seven hundred and seventy-seven years, which was a very significant number in Jewish tradition, being a number of perfection.  However, Lamech died, as we will soon see, in the flood, while his son Noah, lived through it.

Noah was five hundred years old, “the son of five hundred years,” as the Hebrew puts it, and he had three sons Shem, Ham and Japheth.  It would appear that Shem was the eldest, followed by Ham and Japheth, but we don’t really know any more than this.

I don’t need to know all the details.  God will sort them out.  I just need to be faithful.  It doesn’t matter about circumstances or superstition.  Better to do what God says than to have a “lucky number.”

Prayer

Father, thank you that You would choose me, and that You love me.  Please change me so that I become much more like You and far more willing to do what you say.  I need You in all I do, and I ask that You will change lives for eternity as a result of my obedience.  Please reveal Yourself to me and let me walk in the fullness of Your presence and joy.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen
