2 Ways to Live Long

Genesis 5:15-20

15 Mahalaleel lived sixty-five years and was father to Jared[1]. 16 After becoming father to Jared, Mahalaleel lived eight hundred and thirty years and was father to sons and daughters. 17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.

18 Jared lived a hundred sixty-two years and was father to Enoch[2]. 19 And, after becoming father to Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years and was father to sons and daughters. 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.

Jared means “descent” or “went down,” and Enoch means “Dedicated.”  Mahalaleel was the first person in Seth’s genealogy not to live to nine hundred years old… he only made it to eight hundred and ninety-five, poor chap.  But, what about Jared?  Nine hundred and sixty-two years old… that’s better than a good innings (cricket terminology, for those who are unfamiliar).  Jared was the second oldest person ever to live.

So, I think I’ve discovered the secret to long life… either live before the flood, which, of course is now impossible, or put your whole life in Jesus hands and live forever.  Only in Christ is the true intention for mankind restored, that they walk with God and that they live for eternity… and with a restored body, not just as some spirit floating around somewhere.

I need to align my life with God’s plans if I want to know true joy and experience His fullness.  Only as I’m in tune with Yahweh will I realise the deep desires of my heart, because He’s the one who put them there.

Father, please help me to know what You’re saying and to see what You’re doing.  I want to be aligned with You in every possible way.  Please guide my thought life… not just what I take in, but particularly what I continuously think about when I’m on my own.  Let my very thoughts bring glory to Your name and may they all align with Your purposes.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
