6 Seth lived a hundred and five years, and was father to Enosh. 7 And, after becoming father to Enosh, Seth lived eight hundred and seven years and was father to sons and daughters. 8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve, and he died.
9 Enosh lived ninety years, and was father to Kenan. 10 And, after becoming father to Kenan, Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years and was father to sons and daughters. 11 And all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.
12 Kenan lived seventy years and was father to Mahalaleel.
13 And, after he became father to Mahalaleel, Kenan lived eight
hundred and forty years and he was father to sons and daughters. 14
And all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.
Red (Adam) was father to Appointed (Seth), who was father to Man (Enosh), who was father to (Possession), who was father to Praise of God (Mahalalel). So, Red appointed man (as a) possession (for) the praise of God. Perhaps, this is stretching things a little… However, the truth is that Jesus’ blood (Red) did set man apart, appoint man, as the children, possession of God, for His praise… and these are the first five generations in the continuing “righteous.” Or perhaps “chosen,” line of Adam… (Abel was gone) i.e. the line of Noah.
All these men lived more than nine hundred years, had other sons and daughters, then died, unceremoniously. There is a strong reminder of the curse of death, even though the lives were extraordinarily long from our perspective… and the details are very matter of fact… e.g. there’s no hint of grace, right or wrong or eternity… just living, having children and dying.
I’m here for more than that! I’m certainly here for the praise of God (Mahalaleel), and, in the Christ, Jesus, I have life forever, as David so readily anticipated in Psalm 23.
Father, thank you that you are my shepherd. Thank you that You guide me, lie me down in green pastures, lead me beside still waters, and restore my soul. Thank you that you correct me and pull me out of danger. Thank you that You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies, that You anoint my head with oil, and that my cup overflows. Surely, goodness and mercy will follow me all my days, and I’ll live in Your house forever.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
