Made In God’s Likeness

Genesis 5:1-2

1 This (is) the book[1] of the generations of Adam:

In the day of God creating[2] Adam, He made him in the likeness[3] of God. 2 He created them male[4] and female[5], He blessed them and He called their name Adam[6] (which means “mankind” or “red”) in the day of them being created[7].

Application

Chapter five of Genesis introduced the generations of Adam… This should be fun… well, I’m not big on generations, but it appears to be very important to God.  Accordingly, I should take a little more interest and notice in this area.

The chapter commences with the overview of the creation of Adam.  It says that, when God created Adam, He made him in His own image or likeness.  It also says that he created them man and woman, and God gave them the name Adam.  You might recall that it was Adam, the man, who gave the woman the name Eve… but they were both created Adam, meaning “mankind” or “red,” and this is what God (Elohim in these verses) named them at creation.

From this I am again reminded that I’m made in God’s likeness.  I carry His image and I’m set apart from all the rest of creation, as such.  I also see the intention for equality between the man and the woman, in that God saw them as “Adam.”  God also told them to cleave and to be one flesh back in chapter 2.

Prayer

Father, please help me, because I need you so much in every area, from my mind and ability to trust You to every little thing pertaining to life.  I thank you for Your healing.  I thank you for Your provision.  I thank you for my family… And Father God, I ask for Your hand on us today and moving forward. Above all, please give me excitement about serving You, and show me what that’s supposed to look like.  Again, I offer my whole self to You.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
