It doesn’t matter if I’m not serving God all that well. What matters is that I’m serving Him

Genesis 31:24-25

24 And God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream of the night, and He said to him, “Watch out[1] for yourself, in case you speak with Jacob from good or evil.”25 And Laban overtook[2] Jacob.  Jacob had pitched[3] his tent on the mountain, and Laban (and) his brothers pitched[4] (their tents). on Mount Gilead.

Application

God looks after me, even when I have no hope of looking after myself.

God appeared to Laban in a dream as he hotly pursued Jacob.  God didn’t just say, “Don’t hurt Jacob,” but, He pretty much said, “Don’t say anything, good or bad, to Jacob, because it’s going to come back on you.  Watch out for yourself!”

Next day, Laban overtook Jacob, who was camped on Mount Gilead (meaning “rocky Mountain”).  Laban also pitched his tent there with his men.

The thing is, God cares for me so much that He’s watching out for me, even when I have no clue that someone is chasing me.  It’s a week down the track, and Jacob thought he was home free… well on the way home, free.  He had no reason to expect that Laban would be following him, yet, all the while, God was protecting Jacob, despite his deceitful behaviour and despite his wife’s crime in stealing Laban’s household gods… and this passage also shows it was despite the idolatry in the family… I mean Jacob’s favourite wife, possibly his best friend in the world worshipping other gods… and it pointed to the possibility that, at best, Jacob’s own relationship with Yahweh was weak.

It doesn’t matter if I’m not serving God all that well.  He has chosen me, and He will bring me to the place of surrender and relationship, where I hand everything over to Him.

Prayer

Father, thank you so much for meeting with me just now.  I don’t know You very well… nowhere near as well as I would like, and I thank you for Your protection and love, despite my many weaknesses.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
