I need to be careful of my words and my commitments. They are binding in God’s sight, and should be so in my own sight, too.

Genesis 27:5-9

5 And Rebekah was listening in (on) the word(s) of Isaac to Esau his son, and Esau went (out into) the field to hunt game to bring (back). 6 And Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Look, I heard your father speaking to Esau your brother, saying, 7 “Bring me game, and prepare tasty food for me, and I’ll eat it and bless you before (The Lord) Yahweh and before my death. 8 But, now, my son, listen to my voice… (listen) to what I’m commanding you. 9 Go now to the sheep and goats and take for me two good kids[1] from[2] the goats[3], and I’ll prepare them (as) tasty food for you father, just as he loves.

The plot thickens somewhat… It turns out that Rebecca was eves dropping while Isaac gave Esau his instructions.  So, the minute Esau went out the door to go hunting, Rebekah ran and grabbed Isaac, her favourite son, and filled him in on the situation.  She then literally commanded Isaac to go and get a couple of good kids from the goats, and Rebekah said that she would prepare them the way that Isaac’s father loved them as tasty food for him.

Now, I accept that Isaac had bought the birthright of the older son from Esau.  However, the part about the blessing was a little unclear to me.  My understanding is that the birthright is the empowering of the person with all authority of rulership over the household… the right to govern, if you like.  The blessing was then the reward for taking over the responsibility to rule the household, and it entailed the receipt of a spoken blessing and double the inheritance of other beneficiaries.  Isaac had bought all of this, and now Esau was reneging.

I need to be careful of my words and my commitments.  They are binding in God’s sight, and should be so in my own sight, too.

Father, please help me to be the person that You want me to be.  Thank you that You have given me so many gifts, and please don’t allow me to focus on the things that aren’t perhaps going as well as I would like.  Thank you that you have given me the double blessing and that I rule with Jesus… the rights of Your firstborn… Please help me to be grateful for Your over-abundant generosity.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
