I may be saved by grace, but the onus is on me to obey BECAUSE of what God has done.

Genesis 26:4-5

4 I’ll multiply your seed like the stars in[1] the skies and I’ll give your seed all these lands, and, through[2] your seed, all nations of the land will bless themselves[3]5 because[4] Abraham listened to my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my regulations[5] and my teachings.

Application

Isaac was told that God had already given him what wasn’t in his possession as yet.  Yet, in the very next verse, God said that he would give the land to Isaac’s seed… and that, in his seed, the nations of the land would “bless themselves” or “invoke blessing upon themselves” (Hitpael use of the verb in Hebrew)  i.e. in Isaac’s seed or descendant… one seed, one descendant… Jesus, the Messiah, the anointed One, the Saviour of the whole world, not just the Jews.

  1. I can trust God for the things He says, even if I can’t see the immediate results, and even if they don’t appear to have happened in my lifetime.
  2. Any blessing that I can invoke from God, I call to pass because of the work of Jesus, the Christ, and His finished work on the cross of Calvary.

God’s promise to increase Isaac was on the basis, however, of him aligning himself with

Yahweh’s voice, His charge, His commandments, His regulations and His teachings…. I may be saved by grace, but the onus is on me to obey BECAUSE of what God has done.  Holiness and obedience are still God’s requisites for His followers… and for Abraham and Isaac, obedience meant the privilege of having God’s seed in their line.

Prayer

Father, please help me to love you, honour You, hear Your voice, keep Your charge, your commandments, Your regulations and Your teachings.  Please help me to be an example of who You are on earth… please let Your word, which says “as He (Christ) is, so are we in this world,” be true in my life.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
