Jacob absolutely snaked his way into buying the rights off Esau with his soup.

Genesis 25:31-34

31 And Jacob said, “Sell[1] me your rights as the firstborn[2] as of today!” 32 And Esau said, “Look, I’m going to die… what (are) these rights as the firstborn[3] to me?” 33 And Jacob said, “Promise me with an oath as of today!” And (Esau) promised him with an oath, and sold his rights as the firstborn to Jacob. 34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil[4] stew, and (Esau) ate and drank, got up and went… and Esau despised[5] his rights as the firstborn.

Application

So, the plot thickens.  Esau came in from the hunting trip, tired and exhausted, and it appears he may have even been famished… at least, he said he was going to die, so what good was his birthright?  It’s like he was begging for food so that he wouldn’t die.

Apparently, God didn’t view it quite as seriously, though, because Scripture records that Esau “despised his birthright.”  The firstborn was supposed to not only inherit the double portion of the belongings, but also the responsibility and authority that the father had in the household.  In giving Jacob his birthright, Esau was abdicating all his responsibilities to his family. Only a father could legitimately change the son who was due the birthright, and that would probably be on account of bad character and conduct.

On the other hand, I see Jacob’s slimy disposition coming into play.  (Mind you, my name is James, which is the same as Jacob and equals, “slimy trickster”).  Anyway, I have to ponder how long Jacob had been conspiring to access the rights of the firstborn?  He absolutely snaked his way into buying the rights off Esau with his soup.

Praise God that He’s above both the things I do that despise His gifts to me and the actions I take in selfishness and hurtful usury of others.  I need Jesus and His blood to be righteous, and only in Jesus do I have the rights as a firstborn, which He, Jesus, God, holds so loosely that He’s willing to share them with me, without despising them.

Prayer

Father, please help me to be like you!  Please help me to respect what You respect, and to get rid of my slimy selfish behaviour.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
