If the result isn’t what I have been expecting, I don’t have to get flustered about it

Genesis 24:38-41

38 But instead[1], go to the house of my father and to my family, and take a wife for my son.’  39 And I said to my owner and master, ‘Perhaps, the woman won’t go (and) follow[2] me.’ 40 And he said to me, ‘(The Lord) Yahweh, who I walk back and forth before, will send His angel with you and He’ll make your way successful, and you’ll take a wife for my son from my family and from the house of my father. 41 Then[3], you’ll be cut off[4] from my oath[5], because you came to my family, and, if[6] they didn’t give (a wife for my son), you’re cut off from my oath[7].’”

Application

Abraham’s slave conveyed the entire conversation between Abraham and himself concerning taking a wife for Isaac, Abraham’s son.  He told how he had to take an oath, but was concerned that the woman might not come back with him.  However, Abraham declared several things: a) that Yahweh’s angel would go with the slave and ensure a good outcome, and b) if the former didn’t happen (i.e. a wife for Isaac follow the slave home) then the slave would be free of the oath because he had been to see Abraham’s family and the problem lay with them, not the slave.

As Gods slave, I feel God’s promise to me is similar to me:

  1. God will send His angel with me… in fact, even better, He has put His Holy Spirit in me, and He will determine a good outcome, and
  2. My role is to be obedient.  If the result isn’t what I have been expecting, I don’t have to get flustered about it, because all I had to do, all along, was to be obedient and let God fulfil His own plan.

Prayer

Father, thank you that You are with me, and indeed promise that You’ll never leave me nor forsake me.  Thank you that You go before me to ordain Your outcome in every circumstance, and please help me to completely trust You.  Help me also to hear what You want me to do, and give me the courage to obey without compromise.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
