It doesn’t matter what happens to me. God is in control
5 And he said to them, “I am seeing your father’s face… that it’s not as (was) to me before, in the past… but the God of my father was with me. 6 And you know that I slaved for your father with all my strength, and your father has been sarcastic with me and changed my wages ten times, but God hasn’t allowed him to bring trouble to me.
Jacob had a meeting with his wives out in the field among the sheep and goats, and, there, he told them that he’d been watching Laban’s face. He said, “Your father’s not looking at me the way he used to… and it’s not because he’s getting happier! You both know how hard I worked for your father, with every bit of strength that I have, but he’s just been sarcastic to me and changed my waged ten times.”
We know that Laban tricked Jacob once, in the small matter of swapping Leah for Rachel, and getting another seven years of work out of Jacob. We also know that Jacob made an arrangement over his wages after fourteen years so that he could grow his own flocks. But, evidently, and as we will soon find out, Laban kept stirring up the pot and changing Jacob’s remuneration scheme, one would think, in order to lessen the amount he was paying Jacob … sounds like companies I’ve heard about. Still, Laban was unable to hurt Jacob, because God wouldn’t let him.
This is the key: It doesn’t matter what happens to me. God is in control and nothing can hurt me in terms of His overall plan for my life, a plan to prosper me and give me a future.
Father, please help me to keep my eyes fixed on You, and thank you that You look at me with the same loving eyes as You look at Your perfect Son. Thank you for Your forgiveness, and thank you for Your presence. Please help me to recognise more of Your presence. I so need You in, and for, everything.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
