35 They got their father drunk (with) wine that night, too, and the younger (daughter) got up and she lay down with him, and he didn’t know when she lay down and when she got up. 36 And the two daughters of Lot were pregnant by their father. 37 The older (daughter) gave birth to a son, called his name Moab, and he (is) the father of (the nation of) Moab today. 38 The younger (daughter) also gave birth to a son, called his name Benammi, and he (is) the father of (the nation of) Ammon to this day.
Lot’s two daughters caused Lot to drink a lot, and sin a lot, too. They both slept with their father and became pregnant to him, bearing two sons by him. The eldest gave birth to Moab (meaning “from the father”), who was the founder of the nation of Moab, who, in turn caused a lot of pain down the track for Israel… but they were closely related. The younger also gave birth to a son who was called Benammi (meaning “son of my people”), who became the father of all the nation of Ammon, also a pain in the neck and a thorn in the side for Israel… but should have been family.
What I think will only affect a generation, may, one day, affect a nation or even the world. Lot’s rebellion against Abraham not only brought him into ruin and sin, but generated Moab and Ammon, who both eventually rose up against Israel.
What can I do today that will perhaps cause a nation, or the whole world, to be influenced for good at some stage in the distant future… I know no better answer than to propagate the good news about Jesus and to encourage people to live God’s way.
Father, please help me to think, say and do things today that will advance Your kingdom, glorify Your name and bring Your purposes to pass for generations and nations in the future. Please give me wisdom and discernment so that I might hear and see what You are doing, and speak and do those things.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
