Where Else Can I Go?

Psalm 73:21-28

21 When I was cynical inside

And my heart[1] was pierced,

22 I was stupid and ignorant[2],

Like an animal.

23 But I am continually with you,

You hold my right hand.

24 Your advice guides me

And after, you will take me to glory.

25 Who (do I have) in heaven except for you?

And I take pleasure in nothing else on earth but you.

26 My body and mind[3] will come to an end,

But God is my inner being’s huge Rock and (he is) my possession forever.

27 See, (those who are) far away from you will be destroyed,

You will put an end to all who are unfaithful.

28 But coming close to God is good for me,

I have set up the Owner & Master, God, as my shelter,

And I will speak (about) all he does.

[1] “internal organ/seat of emothion” [2] “no knowledge” [3] “inner man”

Application

It seems that all of us are at some stage stupid and ignorant.  I certainly tried to live life my own way.  I tried to manage without God.  However, when I look back, I see the hopelessness of the way I used to live, I am thankful that nothing worse happened.

In Christ, I am continually in God’s presence. He leads and guides me by Holy Spirit and will bring me into his glorious presence.  This is a promise both here on earth as I come to him in worship and also for eternity where I will live with him forever.

What a question! Who do I have in heaven except for you?  Peter asked something similar when he said, “Where else can we go when you alone have the words of life?  I don’t have a whole host of choices really.  All I can do is choose God and life or to rebel against God, which necessarily means I choose death.  As for me and my family, I choose life.

There’s nothing else on the whole earth to treasure, except God.  Even my body and my plans will come to an end.  So what good are earthly things in comparison to life, and yet I covet them and strive for them.  I need to lay down striving for success, money, houses, holidays and things.  And I need to take up a focus on the Lord Jesus Christ and the eternal work that he has for me to do.

It’s one thing to say that God’s my rock and my shelter, but it’s quite another thing to rely on him for everything and prove his word.

Prayer

Father, please forgive me for my independence and for working so hard at my own plans and at providing for myself.  Father please show me how to live for you alone.  Please show me those things that are important from your perspective and those that are just worldly.  Be my rock and my shelter.  I come to you asking for you peace and for your provision.  I need you to meet my needs and make the path straight in front of me.

IJN Amen
