Psalm 103:1-12

¹ Soul, praise the Lord!

Everything inside me, (praise) his name! (It’s) set apart.

² Soul, praise the Lord!

Don’t forget any of the things he’s done!

³ He forgives you and removes all your guilt,

He heals all your diseases,

⁴ He pays a ransom to buy your life back from destruction,

He gives you a crown (of his) goodness, kindness and mercy,

⁵ He fills you with (what you) desire,

He renews your youth (so you can be like an) eagle.

⁶ The Lord acts[1] with justice,

He makes decisions (in favour) all (those who are) crushed.

⁷ He revealed his ways to Moses

(And he revealed) his actions to Israel’s descendants.

⁸ The Lord is merciful and gracious,

He is slow to get angry

And he (shows) great goodness and kindness.

⁹ He won’t oppose us forever

And He won’t always be[2] (angry)

¹⁰ He hasn’t done to us (what) the things we’ve done wrong (deserved),

He hasn’t repaid us for our wickedness,

¹¹ His great goodness and kindness to us who are in awe of him

Is as high as the heavens are above the earth.

¹² He has sent our crimes far away,

As far the east is from the west.

Application

I need to get myself and give myself a talking to.  When I feel that things aren’t going so well, I need to sit myself down and say, “Soul, Praise God!!”  My thanks to God isn’t dependent on how things are going.  I am always to be thankful, always rejoicing and always praying.  My peace, joy and gratitude are not dependent on good circumstances but on a good God!!!

He forgives me.  He removes every stigma attached to what I’ve done wrong so that there is no more shame or guilt.  I was like a slave being sold into death and destruction and he bought me back and gave me life.  Instead of giving me what I deserve, which is where I was headed – instead of death and destruction, he gives me what my heart desires and he restores my youth.  He helps those who can’t help themselves and I need to recognise that that’s me – all the time.

He shows his mercy and kindness to me.  There is no measurement that can describe how great his love and goodness for me is.  The best the writer can come up with is that it’s as high as heaven is above earth and science has shown that to be outside our comprehension.  Then he put my sin even further from me – so far that it can never touch me again.  Considering this, I should at least turn away from sin myself.

Prayer

Father, I cannot begin to imagine how great your love is for me.  Please help me to forgive others the way you forgive so that I never hold another grudge.  Please help me to treat others the way that you treat me so that I give them your love rather than what they deserve from a natural perspective.  Help me to always remember your goodness and mercy to me so that I don’t judge others who may well be much better people than I have been.  Fill me Holy Spirit.  Let your life, power and character cling to every part of my being.  Lord, I praise you!
