Psalm 144

Written by King David

¹ Kneel down and praise the Lord, my Rock[1];

He trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle.

² (He is) my goodness, kindness and my fortress;

(He is) my high safe place and my rescuer;

He is my shield and I run to him for protection;

He conquers the nations[2] under me.

³ Lord, who’s mankind (that you want to) know him?

Who’s a man’s son (that you would) think about him?

⁴ Mankind is like a breath;

His days are like a shadow passing over.

⁵ Stretch your skies Lord and come down;

Touch the mountains and they will smoke,

⁶ Let the lightning strike[3] and scatter them;

Shoot your arrows and cause them to panic[4].

⁷ Stretch your hand out from on high;

Rescue me and snatch me out of deep water,[5]

Out of the hands of foreigners

⁸ Whose mouths speak lies[6]

And whose right hand is a right hand of deception.

⁹ God, I will sing a fresh new song to you;

I will make music with a ten-stringed instrument and sing praises to you,

¹⁰ Who saves[7] kings,

(And) who sets David his slave free from the evil sword.

¹¹ Rescue me and snatch me away from foreigners[8]

Whose mouths speak lies

And whose right hand is a right hand of deception.

¹² Let our sons in their early life be like grown up plants,

And let our daughters be corner stones, carved (as if they were for a) palace.

¹³ Let our grain sheds be full, providing all kinds (of produce);

Let our flocks (of sheep and goats) produce thousands and tens of thousands in our fields.

¹⁴ Let our cattle carry their calves[9] without miscarrying,

(And let there be) no cry of distress in our streets.

¹⁵ The nation who is like this will be happy,

The nation[10] whose God is the Lord will be happy.

Application

God is my hope. He prepares me for every situation way before it ever happens. I am ready to fight, not because of my strength and my ability but because God has been getting me ready for it for a long time. He is everything I need. He even gives me his goodness, righteousness and protection. I am actually nothing, but he stoops down to come to me, to know all about me and to rescue me.

Even though God has prepared me, I only have power through him. Preparation isn’t enough. I need the Holy Spirit to empower me and for God himself to shield me and rescue me. I have the capacity to be deceived by the enemy, but my God never is deceived. Lies have no power over God who is truth and sees only truth. Therefore, I need to be open and honest with God. There’s nothing hidden from him, not even a thought. Accordingly, I may as well tell him the truth and submit myself to his call and rule in my life.

I need to have something of freshness and newness for God every day. His mercies are new every morning. I always have something to be thankful for. I always have a reason for joy in my life and I need to sing out in gratefulness to God.

God will bless me. He has control over my provision and resources.

Prayer

Father, let our provisions and resources overflow according to your goodness and kindness. Thank you that I already have so much and that you provide all I need. However, you know my heart and you know why I want resources and how I want to serve you more and more. I am not asking so I can get rich but so I can be released into all you want to do in me, through me and through what I give. Help me to be faithful and generous.
