No One Deserves More Praise!

Psalm 76

Written by Asaph

For the Choir Director

1 God is known in Judah;

His name is great in Israel.

2 His tent is in Salem;

The place (where) he lives is in Zion.

3 There he broke the flaming arrows,

The shield, the sword and the (weapons of) war.

[Stop and think about that!][1]

4 You shine brightly;

(You are) mightier and more magnificent than the mountains (full of) game animals.

5 (Those who were) brave[2] were defeated and plundered;

They became drowsy and slept[3];

None of the mighty (men could) use[4] their hands[5].

6 Jacob’s God, (when) you threatened them,

The riders and the horses fell asleep[6].

7 You are to be feared[7]!

Who can stand in your presence once you are angry?

8 Your verdict[8] was heard from heaven;

The earth was in awe and was quiet.

9 God stood up (to give his) decision

To save all the poor and needy (people) on earth.

[Stop and think about that!][9]

10 Mankind’s anger will (bring you) praise;

You will clothe yourself with what is left of their anger.

11 (Make your) promises to God with an oath and fulfil them.

Let all (those who are) around him bring gifts (to the One) who is to be feared.

12 He will restrain the spirits of leaders;

He is (held) in awe by the kings of the earth.

[1] The word used here is “Selah”.  It is most probably a musical term indicating the end of a verse and can be translated as “Pause.”  It is also a possibility that it could indicate for the reader to stop and think about what has just been read. [2] “mighty inner man” [3] A euphemism for Died [4] “find” [5] “no/without all strength find hands” [6] A euphemism for Died [7] “feared/held in awe/reverenced” [8] “Judgement” [9] The word used here is “Selah”.  It is most probably a musical term indicating the end of a verse and can be translated as “Pause.”  It is also a possibility that it could indicate for the reader to stop and think about what has just been read.

Application

As part of God’s church, I actually know him.  He is my hero.  He loves me and he fights against all my enemies.  No one can stand against him.

There is no one more wonderful.  No one has greater glory, or deserves more praise, than God who is here with me and fights for me.

No one who comes against me can even get their weapons out to fight – not because I’m any good, but because God is fighting against them.

I am to be constantly in awe of God who defeats every one of my enemies and puts them to death.

All the earth has to listen to God’s verdict.  It’s final.  Nothing can stand against him.  There is no argument that can outsmart him or pervert his justice.  And, his decision is to save all those who are poor and needy.  This is not only those who are poor and needy because they lack physical things, but people who are poor and needy in their spirit, realising that God is their only true wealth.

God is in control.  Kings and rulers will have to obey him.  Nothing is outside his realm.

I am to make my promises in his name and then keep them because he is the only thing that is ever to be feared.

Prayer

Father, thank you for your love.  Thank you for coming to me.  Thank you that I live in relative luxury and ease in a land where it is generally free to worship you.  Father, make my heart thankful and joyful for these wonderful gifts.  Make me someone who sticks out as a light in this dark world.   Father, teach me to fear you and be in awe of you.  You are mighty and there is no one who can stand against you.

Fill me Holy Spirit and work out your purposes through me.

IJN Amen
