No Hiding!

Psalm 139:1-12

Written by King David – For the Choir Master

 1 Lord, you’ve examined me and you know (all about) me,

2 You know (when) I sit down and (when) I get up;

You understand what I’m thinking from a distance.

3 You sift me on my journey and (when) I’m lying down;

You’re (very) familiar with all my ways.

4 Sure enough Lord, you know all (I’m going to say)

(When there’s) not (even) a word on my tongue.[1]

5 You have put a barrier (of protection)[2] in front of me and behind me.

You have put your hand on me.

6 (Your) wisdom and knowledge are beyond me and incomprehensible,

(So) high I can’t reach them.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I (go to) run away to from your presence?

8 If I go up to heaven, you’re there,

(If) I make my bed in the grave, sure enough[3], (you’re there),

9 (If) I’m lifted up on the wings of the morning,

(If) I settle down at the end of the sea,

10 Even there your hand will guide me,

And your right hand will take hold of me.

11 If I say, “The darkness is certain to crush me,

And the light around me will be like night.”

12 Even the darkness isn’t dark to you;

Night is light like the day;

Darkness and light (are the same to you).

[1] “not word/speech tongue if/though/lo Yahweh know all” [2] ‘enclosed/shut in/besieged” [3] “behold/see”

Application

Nothing is hidden from God… NOTHING!  How foolish to think that I can go undetected in what I’m doing, that I can hide in the dark thinking that no one will ever notice when God sees everything.

He already knows everything about my past, present and future and yet he loves me and see me perfect because his Son has payed the ransom to free me.  God has examined me and I’ve been laid bare.  He knows absolutely everything – where I am, where I go, when I sleep, when I get up.  He even knows what I’m going to think before I think it and what I’m going to say before I say it.

Despite knowing all about me, it becomes evident that he doesn’t collect all the information so he can hold it over me and judge me.  God has put a barrier around me to protect me and keep that enemy away.  It doesn’t matter how far I try to run from him, he will still be there to protect me.  God has chosen me and I am to serve him out of gratitude for all he has done.  I also need to remember that he helped me even when I was running from him.

The darkness in my life was never dark to God.  He saw clearly and knew the ending from the beginning.  I just need to make my calling and election sure by trusting in Jesus now, putting everything on his shoulders and turning away from all sin in my life.

Prayer

Father, I need you.  You are my hope for life.  You are my hope for provision.  You are my hope for my family, my work, my fruitfulness.  Apart from you and your Son, Jesus, I can do nothing.

I offer myself to you to be a sacrifice of praise, to obey you, to be whatever you want me to be and to go wherever you want me to go.

Thank you that you know all about me and so I have nothing to hide.  Thank you that with you I can be open and honest.  Help me to be a transparent person, with integrity before you and before men.

IJN Amen
