God Does Have A Plan For Me!

Psalm 139:13-24

17 Mighty God, how valuable are your purposes for me!

How mighty and numerous is their total.

18 Counting them, they’re more numerous than the sand;

When I wake up I’m still with you.

19 God[1], if only you’d kill the wicked (people)!

Turn away from me, you men (who shed) blood.

20 They speak divisively (about) you;

Your enemies lie (when they) build you up[2].

21 Don’t I hate (those who) hate you?

And don’t I abhor (those who) stand against you?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred;

They have become my enemies.

23 Mighty God, examine me and know (what I’m like) inside;

Test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if (there’s any) offensive way in me

And lead me in the way that (lasts) forever.

Application

What I love about David is his crazy way of thinking.  After spending eighteen verses talking about how God knew every part of him before he ever existed and how he has known everything else since, David does two amazing things:

  • First he says. “Well, God, if only you’d kill all the wicked people.  I hate them and they’re my enemies, you know.”
  • And then he says, “I give you permission to examine me and see what I’m like inside.”  As if God didn’t already know.

The truth is that God does have a plan for me.  It’s not just one big plan that one day will pop into existence, but it’s a day by day plan with every purpose determined before my life began.  God sees me as valuable and his purpose for my life is important.  He has put more thought into my life than I have the capacity to measure.  It is enough for me to know that when I wake up each day God is with me.

I mustn’t be deceived by people who say nice things about God, but don’t serve him with their lives.  It’s not what I say that counts but who I am when nobody else is watching.  I need to have discernment to be able to identify these people who hate God and go the other way.  If they are chasing me, I need God’s protection.

Finally, I need to give God permission to change me to be all that he wants me to be.  I have a choice to serve or not to serve, to be faithful or not to believe.  God is waiting for my permission to make me like him.

Prayer

Father, you have my permission to examine me and point out the things you want me to change.  Lord, I want to serve you and honour you.  So, if there are things in my life, and I’m sure there are, that you want to change, please take me and show me.  Lead me in your eternal ways.  Fill me Holy Spirit and make me like you.

IJN Amen
