1 Peter 1:1-11
1 (From) Peter an apostle[1] (which means “messenger”) of Jesus, the Christ[2] (which means the anointed[3] One),
(To those who are) foreigners scattered throughout Pontus (which means “the Sea”), Galatia (which means “land of the Gauls”), Cappadocia (which means province of good horses”), Asia (which means “orient” or “arises”[4]) and Bithynia (which means “a violent rushing”.
To those who are) chosen 2according to what God the Father knew beforehand, being set apart by[5] the Holy Spirit to obey Jesus the Christ and to be sprinkled with his blood.
Kindness and peace be multiplied to you!
3 Let God, the Father of our Owner and Master, Jesus the Christ, be praised. According to his great mercy has given us new birth[6] into a living hope through Jesus the Christ being raised up from (being) dead. 4 (He has given us) an inheritance (that) lasts forever, is pure, will never fade and continues in heaven. 5 It’s protected by the power of God through complete trust for a salvation ready to be revealed in the end time.
6 You greatly rejoice in this now, even if it’s necessary for you to be saddened for a little while by various tests, 7 so that the proof of your complete trust, (that is) more precious than gold (which can be) destroyed, will be found to praise, honour and glorify Jesus the Christ, even though you are tested by fire.
8 You haven’t seen him but you love him unconditionally. You don’t see him now but you completely trust and greatly rejoice in him with indescribable joy, and (you’re) full of honour and glory, 9 receiving back the end (result) of your complete trust – salvation of your souls[7].
10 The prophets, who spoke from God[8] (about) the kindness (extended) to you, looked intently, searched for and asked about this salvation. 11 They tried to find out what person[9] or time the Spirit of Christ in them was making it known as (Spirit of Christ) had predicted Christ’s suffering and the honour and glory after this.
[1] “delegate/messenger/is sent” – Applied to the 12 apostles, Paul, Barnabas, Timothy and Silvanus. [2] “Messiah” [3] Anointed means smeared with oil for the purpose of setting apart for office. [4] Often determined to mean east, which is a reference to the sun arising in the east. [5] “of” [6] “born again” [7] Some early mss translate without “your” ie “salvation of souls” [8] “prophesied, spoke under divine inspiration” [9] “some/someone”
Application
God has given me a living hope. It’s not a vague idea or a possibility, but it’s a living expectation that is evidenced by Jesus being raised up from being dead. My hope is not in religion, words or even provision for this life. My hope is in a God who will raise me up from being dead, even if my ashes have been scattered to the four ends of the earth. That’s of course unless he comes while I’m still alive and translates me from this world into the next. Sufferings, trials, persecutions, hardships all may happen but my joy is in the fact that Jesus is coming again and that I have his power in my life now.
My complete trust in God is the access to all the power I will ever need in this life. The formula is something like this: Complete Trust in God = All the Power I will Ever Need! Complete trust is more precious than gold and so I should guard it more carefully than anything else on earth. Complete trust should be so complete that it even stands the test of fire. The end result of this complete trust is eternal life for me and for others.
I am privilege to live at this time when God has already made the plan so clear. The prophets were able to predict Christ’s suffering but they didn’t have the timing for his coming or the evidence of the empty tomb. God is calling me to trust him completely, to let go of the worries, doubts and cares that would rob me of victory and to see him miraculously do what I could never have expected in the natural.
Prayer
Father I have decided to trust you completely. Forgive me for doubting you. I trust you for eternity and so I feel I have no other choice than to trust you for here and now. You know my needs and I ask you to meet them. However, I also ask that you will show me how to bring miracles into other people’s lives so that they come to trust you completely, too.
IJN Amen
