Answering the Cry for Help..

Psalm 106:41-48

41 He gave them into the nations’ hands

And (his people) were ruled by those who hated them.

42 Their enemies also squeezed them

And brought them down under their power[1].

43 (God) rescued them many times,

(But) they rebelled (against his) advice

And sank sown in their wickedness.

44 (Still) he saw their distress[2]

And he heard their cry.

45 He remembered his legally binding agreement with them

And reconsidered in his greatness, goodness and kindness.

46 He showed[3] them mercy

In front of all (those who) captured them.

47 “Lord, our God, save us;

Gather us together from the nations

(So that we can) thank your name that is set apart

And adore you with songs of praise.”

48 Let Israel’s God, the Lord, be adored

Forever and ever.

Let all the people say, “Amen (which means Yes, that’s true)!”

Go crazy praising[4] the Lord[5]!

[1] “hand” [2] “tight/cramped/distressed” [3] :gave/set/put/employed” [4]halal, halal, halal, halĕluyah” which means “boast,” “praise,” “make into a fool” and “act like a madman” [5] “Yah”

Application

Sin may bring pleasure for a short time but it almost invariably leads me into a trap.  Sin will rule me, control me, defame me and squeeze the life out of me.  With sin comes the permission for God’s enemies to come and oppress my life.  Even though God comes to rescue me, if I don’t turn my back on sin, I will end up in a downward spiral that never stops.  I can’t afford to take ungodly advice.  I can’t afford to rebel against the advice that God gives, primarily through the Bible.

The great news is that, despite my sin and wickedness, God sees my distress and hears my cry for help.  He sent his Son into the world to save it not to condemn it.  God is faithful to his promise to save me and cover my sin with the blood of Jesus.  If only I will turn away from sin and believe in Jesus for my rescue!  In sin, I was bound for eternal punishment.  However, in Christ, God reconsiders and sees me as clean and pure.  He gives me honour and privilege.  He seats me in the heavenly places to reign and rule with Christ Jesus and to be a joint heir of all creation with him.  I become adopted as one of God’s own children.

What privilege and honour I have.  There is every reason to be happy.  I have the world’s greatest incentive to say thank you.  I have eternal life and the eternal blessing of God to go with it.

Prayer

Father, God, I praise your name.  I adore you and honour you.  I was in a hopeless situation, governed and squeezed dry by sin, and you set me free.  Thank you for freedom that is beyond expression.  Indeed, you should be adored forever.  Please keep me in your ways and in your care so that my foot doesn’t slip and so that I will be faithful to you.  Lord, my intention is to serve you with my whole life.  Please fill me with your Spirit and guide me so that I can remain faithful.

IJN Amen
