I’ve Now Got God’s DNA

1 Peter 1:22-2:6

²² Having, by obedience to the truth, purified your souls to sincerely love the brothers, eagerly and unconditionally love each other from the heart. ²³ You have been born again, not from a destructible seed but through the indestructible, living and lasting word[1] of God.

²⁴ “All flesh is like grass and all its honour and glory like a flower on the grass.

The grass withers away and the flower falls off,

²⁵ But the Owner and Masters word[2] lasts forever.”[3]

And this is the word of the good news to you.

Chapter 2

¹ So, putting aside all evil, all deceit, pretence, jealousy and all slander, ² (be) like newborn babies and long for the pure milk (that is) genuine, so that you will grow into your salvation, ³ if you have tasted the Owner and Master’s goodness.

⁴ You come to him – a living stone, rejected by people, but chosen and precious in God’s opinion. ⁵ You also, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house, a priesthood (that is) set apart to offer spiritual sacrifices (that are) well received by God through Jesus, the Christ.

⁶ It’s contained in (what was) written (in Scripture),

“Sure enough, I put a chosen stone in Zion, a precious, corner foundation stone.

(Anyone who) believes in him[4] won’t be disgraced.”

Application

I’m not just called to brotherly love or to be a friend to other believers, but I am called to love them unconditionally.  I find it hard to love my own family unconditionally and yet God is calling me to love his church in the same way as he called his son to love her and lay his life down for her.

The key is that I have been born again through God’s indestructible seed.  Not only will I live forever, but I now have God’s DNA, I have his characteristics.  If I will allow the Holy Spirit to work in my life then I will look and act like God’s child.  I need the Holy Spirit’s DNA in me to love the way that God is calling me to love.  I need the DNA of God to live the way that God demands.  I guess the wonderful thing is that God never intended for me to do it in my own strength but to depend totally on him.

I can throw aside all the sin and evil, pretence and things of the past.  I’m like a new baby and a newborn baby only wants milk.  I need the pure essence of the Holy Spirit to feed me and nourish my soul with the things that will enable me to grow strong in God and into his salvation.

God chose his Son who was rejected by people, but God also gave him the place of all honour.  Jesus is a living stone, but I also am a living stone, being built into his house, with Jesus being the key corner and foundation stone that holds the whole house together.  If I remain in him I will never be ashamed.

Prayer

Father, thank you for your son, the living stone and chief corner and foundation stone for your house and my life.  Please help me to stay locked in place as a living stone in your house. Please help me to set my life up on the foundation of Jesus and your word.  May I be fruitful in all I do and may every step be guided by you.
